Ego

In theosophy a distinction is drawn between Ego with the upper case “E” and ego with the lower case. The latter relates to the conventional psychological definition “the dynamic unity which is the individual,” or in a narrower psychoanalytical sense “that part of a person which is in direct touch with reality.” Perhaps a closer definition for theosophical purpose would be “transient personality.” The former, i.e., “Ego,” describes the reincarnating individuality and is that part which “knows itself,” or in other words, is consciousness of being conscious.
